I live in a rural location and I only get about 1.2mb on broadband. This is fine and I can live with this as I live about 7 mile from my exchange. However the past 2-3 weeks it has been getting steadily worse. I am with fast.co.uk and they have been getting me to send them speedtester.bt.com reports to them and they keep on saying that it is testing fine.

I like to watch iplayer which on 1.2mb is 'just' watchable but now i just cant watch it at all.

This morning I tested with bt and received these results

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.

Download Speed
731 Kbps

0 Kbps 2000 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed

Download speedachieved during the test was - 731 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 400-2000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :1632 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 1250 Kbps

Now according to fast thats perfectly fine but it I have been having speeds 1200 kbs to 1400 kpbs for about 2 eyars with fast.

I have done the usual stuff like checking their is nothing in the background downloading stuff and have changed the wireless password so no one is connected via wireless.

Any ideas?

Post your router stats mate.i.e. downstream attenuation noise margin etc

ADSL
Type Interleave Path
Status Show Time
Downstream Upstream
Data Rate (kbps) 1632 448
Noise Margin (dB) 6.0 13.0
Attenuation (dB) 61.0 28.0
Output power(dbm) 17.3 12.4

Well your IP Profile is 1250Kbps so your not going to go faster than that d/l wise.
Sound like your ISP is slowing you down maybe, i'd expect 1000Kbps at least especially at a quiet time like in the morning.

Which exchange is it?

im in the same boat, capped and throttled, although ours is practically unbearable at present, currently capped at 20-30KBps [about 0.1-0.3 mbit]

only solution here is to move house.. considering it!

even downloading a new batch of emails takes noticeable time.

I receieved an email from fast and they had reset something and ask me to wait 24 hours. Seems fine now browsing is fast again but downloading is about 100k mark which is about 20% less than i was getting:(
