slow broadband speed reported? What now?

Hi,

I have had a new BT line installed and checked the estimated broadband speed online which has been reported as 2.5MBs.

This is quite slow. When I ordered I checked the line speed for my postcode which was much higher 6MBs.

It's only been a couple of days since I had it installed.

I've ordered O2 broadband but if the speed is slow as reported I may have to cancel.

Any ideas?

Sometimes you can get higher than those sites report. I say this cause when I had my BT line installed they estimated 5.5mb this was from BT's site & Samknows. Also when i ordered Sky BB Max they estimated 5.5mb, but in reality it is happily running at 13.5mb :)

But it all depends on line noise/distance from the exchange also :)

Hi Mattey1

I am hoping for that to be honest.

I've used a business number on my block and that reports as 6MBs.

I did not know lines for houses next to each other could differ so much.

Line stats are the best indicator of what kind of speeds you can expect. There's info on how to obtain them from your modem/router in the broadband sticky at the top of this forum.

Sounds like those estimates, even the one given when ordering Sky Max, were for ADSL, not ADSL2+.

Hi,

Got my O2 Broadband yesterday and getting 7MBs/0.35MBs.

It's better than what was reported but I'm still trying to get more speed if possible.

stats

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 19.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 14.5 / 29.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.0 / 6.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

I have a down Attenuation of 29.0. I've checked a few site which suggest I should be getting better speeds.

Any ideas from above?

Thanks

Realistically for those stats (as its seems your on ADSL2+/WBC or LLU) you should be getting 12-13mbit downstream and 1-1.2mbit upstream - but if your still in the first few days it will take awhile before you see full speeds - possibly upto 2 weeks before it completely stabalises in some cases.

EDIT: Best case you might see 16Mbit but I highly doubt you will get that -- taking average line quality into account and the SNR target your looking at somewhere between 10 and 13.5Mbit, probably on the higher end as I said above.

hi Rroff,

Is it common to get low speeds in the first few weeks of being connected ?

Funny, I talked to O2 who did not mention this. :)

I asked them to change my noise profile to 3db which has increased my speed to 8.5. I'm monitoring to see if I experience any connection losses. Hopefully not.

Is my only option now to wait and see if the speed increases?

No, it's quite abnormal. The first things you should try are the common ones like putting your modem at the master socket with no extensions.

Hi tolien,
I have only one socket soley for broadband (no phone). :)

I've also tried opening the socket and connecting directly, no luck. Same speeds.

If its a LLU connection (or an ISP not using the BT DLM) then you should very quickly reach full speeds, if not instantly after first connecting. If the provider is using BT's DLM then it can take 10 days to settle.

However in some cases it can take a few days on a new line before you see max speeds - even on LLU, etc.

So I'd leave it a few days before getting too worked up about it as your already getting pretty decent speeds.

You might wanna read up on things like ring wire, etc. just incase to see if there is anything you might need to change locally to get better speeds tho - a good start for this is http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/index.htm

Also by the looks of things you might be in interleaving mode (FEC errors) so you might want to ask the ISP to change that to fastpath if applicable - as this can also boost speeds theoretically.

EDIT when I say boost speeds its more than interleaving can cause a lower max sync - but generally only 512kbit/s less.

Thanks.

I'm using O2 broadband which I believe to be LLU.

I think I will take your advice and see how speeds look next week. If no change then I will have to decide weather I want to keep it or use the 30 day money back guarantee.

Any futher suggestions then please let me know.

Is fastpath available on O2?
