Hi there. I am helping out some friends with there computer troubles. They live in a remote area of cheshire on a farm (not a good start). They originally had BT broadband running happily on a homehum for a good 12 months. This was fine, and ran at about 1mbps (ish). Then they had phone line trouble which meant that the internet did not work atall. After much arguing with BT, ( who claimed it wasn't their problem  ) we managed to get it working on the homehub again. Although it now worked, it was extremely slow. I have now replaced the homehub with a netgear jobbie and a new set of microfilters. The internet works, but still, is very slow. The router status shows:

Modem Status Connected
DownStream Connection Speed 1440 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps

- which should be fine. BUT it doesnt run at that speed atall. Speedtest.net identifies:

- which is clearly not right.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks.

Can you post the stats from the router like attenuation, SNR etc? Those should show if there is a problem with the line that still hasn't been fully fixed since the time you mentioned, which looks to be the case tbh.

While you're at it, try running the BT Speedtest (instructions in sticky).
With a sync rate like that, they've got to be on Max - so the odds are when they were connecting at a low speed their IP profile would get dragged down with it.

OK, the BT speedtest doesnt seem to work. I enter the phone number, click next and it claims that it is temporarily unavailable. But routerstats has shown me this:

Looks to me like the IP Profile is the problem. Speedtest will confirm that since your sync rate is 1440kbps.

Something is causing the sync to drop, which in turn causes the IP Profile to drop to try and make the line more stable. If its a line problem, BT would be best to get a hold off. You could try opening up the master socket and check out the wiring to see if their is a problem, but seems to me like a problem with the line.

Your phone line is quite long, but you do have a good amount of spare noise margin.

You could hit 2mb (cant garuntee it myself) but If you can spare a few minutes I recomend giving this guide a bash.

This is the guide, Appologies if were not allowed outside linkage.

It envolves you modifying your interal wiring and before you ask it is legal according to BT and myself and the users of DSLZone.

good luck!

Also do not forget BT often and forcbily throttle you between certain times, check your ip profile aswell as above suggested.

Ok, what is the best way to contact BT about this without having to deal with all the muppets on the phone? Is there a special number I can call who will be better to deal with? I think I will hang myself if I have to explain to the normal tech support what the problem is...

This quide does not make any sense to me. The router is plugged into the master socket in the house. When it asks me which my master socket looks like, i choose the left hand one (split one with a BT logo at top left). I have just opened it up and it looks nothing like the one on the guide. I then look closer and the guide tells me that the picture I am comparing it to is infact the innards of an extension? It doesnt actually tell me to do anything to the master socket atall. But, there is no point in modifying the extensions, because they are only used for phones! Arggghhh!!!!

The BT speedtest website is still ****** busy. I hate computers.

lol

Thanks for the help so far everyone!

Yeah BT have been known for the occasional inconsistent wiring.

Does it still have a 'test socket' for the phone, if does whack in the modem (with out phone but using the filer) and post the stats if you would do so kindly.

With those stats I personally wouldn't expect any better connection rates. From the modem stats it looks like you're on a 12db SNR margin, if your connection is reliable enough the backend may reduce this margin but it will happen in 3db step every 10 days and only if you you connection speed doesn't auto drop because of problems in those 10 days.

Now then, sorry for the late(ish) reply. I have just turned up to the house again, only to see a BT van disappearing down the road. Apparently they have been here all morning. With my fingers crossed, I headed over to the compters. Success. Now i get a solid 1.5mb down and about 400kb(ish) up.

Thanks for the help everyone!
