Hi, I have 4.87kg gammon joint which I am planning to cook in the slow cooker. :D I was wondering how long I need to cook it for and what steps I should take when cooking it (It's currently in water to get rid of some of the salt) :)

Any help is greatly appreciated and also I wouldn't mind some recommendations on flavours such as honey etc :)

You have a few options. Easiest is just to slap int he slow cooker and cook it for about 8-9 hours for a joint that size. That's it nothing else needed, it will get all its cooking liquor from the meat.

However this can turn out a bit salty. I would boil up a big pan of water and put it in and simmer it for about 20-30 minutes first, then slap it in a cook it (but not the broth). This will make it slightly more tender and less salty. You could even add some star anise and other bits and bobs to the water.

You could also empty a can of coke in the slow cooker then cook the gammon in the coke - sounds odd but tastes brilliant OR;

Cook it as above, take it out, then slash the outside all over in a diamond pattern. Mix up some salt pepper and 1tbs of honey and 1 tbs of english mustard. Spread it all over and finish it off in the oven at 180 degrees for about 20 minutes or until the diamonds start to brown but before the honey burns.

Just some ideas.

Thank you for the advice, I think I like the last idea about finishing it off in the oven with some salt/pepper, honey and mustard :)

I never used to like gammon when I was younger. Never been a fan of salt I still try and avoid it. But I started to eat it when my Nan boiled it in coke.

Just like red said put some coke in the slow cooker with it. It loses pretty much all saltiness and gives it a bit more of a sweet hint. But it doesn't taste like coke.

Soak it overnight in full fat coke then slow cook it inbthe liquor for 8 hours. Then finish with star pattern drizzled in honey and patted with mustard powder in a hot oven for 45 minutes

Made it a few times now.

No need to soak it to remove salt or anything. Just unwrap it from packaging and follow the instructions below.

Its great this way.

Chop a onion or two to cover the bottom, then put in the gammon then pour in any coke but not diet coke. Cherry coke is nice. You want to just about cover it. So near enough 2ltr bottle of coke.

Cover and put on high for a hour then 8-9 hours on low.

Afterwards. Turn off, put the gammon in a overproof dish and take off the chunk of fat if its still on. Should be a thin layer after. Score that criss cross style.

Bung in a pre heated oven on 170c i think it was or gas mark 5 i think for about 15 mins maybe 20. For a nice outer browning and sizzle the fat.

I once put cranberry paste all over where the fat was once just before i put it in the oven and it was even more delish.

Hope that helps.

That looks delicious, I would've taken a photo of mine however hunger got the better of me :D

Also, thanks for all the suggestions everyone (I may need to buy more gammon to try them out :))

How did you cook yours macca? BBQ / smoker?

9 hours in the slow cooker on low, covered in full fat coke, some pepper corns and an onion. Left for the day then the skin peeled off, diamond cuts and drizzled in honey then cloves pushed in each diamond, then roasted and basted hot for an hour.

Bootifull :)

That's my personal favourite way of cooking it, and almost always do it for Christmas.
