Slow CPU

Is there any tell tail signs that your CPU is on the bad side of its life. i mean it takes me about 5 mins to open the internet and when closing it down i get a white screen for 2 mins then back to normal. Basically its slow as hell. i dont think its anything to do with what i got on my computer space wise. is there a program that could show me any thing thats wrong with it

Anyhow, you prolly need a windows defragmentation and maybe some more RAM, cpus don't 'lose speed' over time. A full windows reinstall might be the best overall option. However if you want to see the cpu speed, google 'cpuz'.

Doesn't sound like the CPU

CPU's don't slow down they either stop generate errors causing a crash.

How much ram do you have? how much free HDD space

Do you have lots of background apps running.

Have you scanned for viruses and trojans ?

I assume you mean P4 Prescott. Penryn hasnt been released yet. A very small number of engineering samples have leaked out, but thats about it. Either the computer is running too many programs (anti virus scanners, spyware scanners, firewalls.. the list of 'usefull' programs goes on) which eats up all the cpu runtime... Not to mention all the possible unwanted programs (virus/spyware etc).

i have a bad system really. the programs running are antivirus, firewall and the onboard sound thingie in the task bar (bottom right).

i have a 40GB HDD with 7.77 GBs left, 512mb of DDR2 memory.

i did a defragmentation last night as it happens but still the computer is slow.
I'll put it down to not enough memory i guess. it was running ok didnt have a problem opening stuff up until recently so i thought my cpu might be on the blow.

ok just unistalled some stuff got 12.5GBs left seems to be runing a little better now

seriously, sometimes the only way is to save all your important files and do a complete re-install. Uninstalling programs still leaves loads of crap and i am willing to bet that if you re-install everything will be MUCH quicker.
