Slow downloads with Sky??

Hey guys,

Ive had sky broadband now since september and dont really seen to be able to get a decent download speed to what my modem says im connected at....?? Max ive been able to download on Newsgroups (Thundernews) is 250kB/sec

Does anything look wrong here? Im new to ADSL (I was a Blueyonder/Telewest fan boy, but virgin soon changed that!!)

Also, the telephone line was a NEW line as the property has only every had cable installed.

First off, try a speed test that isn't garbage, like downloading one of the files from here.
There's nothing really wrong with anything you've posted, bar speedtest.net is crap...
 
Have you tried using a different program to download with?

Also you could try changing the port that the program connects at.

According to their website it supports ports 119 (default I assume) 23 , 25, 80 3128.
 
I'm with sky and I have the up2 8MB package. I use Internet Download Manager to download all my files and if I'm downloading a single file i'll average 700 - 900kbs. However, I do live on a newly built estate and the exchange is two roads away. Don't know if this would make a difference.

I have niticed that the DL will never go above 999kbs for some reason. But I'm not that bothered about that.

I'm also confused. If you "used to be a fanboy of Telewest, but Virgin changed that, why do you have sky BB?

I've just downloaded on my sky broadband max the files tolien has linked. As I used to use speedtest.net.

1.5mbps.......I've no complaints.
