Just got back from uni and having a problem with my home wireless network. The speed of the WLAN connection is always changing (11Mbps > 54Mbps), whenever its on 11MBps the internet grinds to a halt when loading web pages. The router is only one floor below. Looked on ADSL guide and saw something about changing the MTU to improve speeds, seems simple enough but a couple of questions:

DRTcp doesnt have a box to change RWIN, is it important?

On ADSL guide it says to change comp MTU settings and not routers, i have seen elsewhere i should change the routers MTU settings and not the comptuers.

Here is the extract relating to my ISP and MTU settings.

In our forums a lot of Virgin ADSL users appear to be experiencing problems with slow or intermittent downloads. For at least some people it appears that tweaking the TCP/IP settings and mainly the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) will improve things.

The optimal values appear to be a MTU of 1430, and a RWIN value of 13900. To help people set these values we suggest you look at the two guides here and here.

1) For those with a router, it is best to change the MTU to 1430 on the computers, rather than on the router

what i dont get is why its soooo slow when its connected at 11Mbps - not exactly a slow speed is it? I have moved the router closer and its worse :( , its staying on 11Mbps the whole time now.

Found a sweet spot for the router. Will give MTU settings a try as d/l speeds even at full connection arent all that (Virgin net  )
