Slow file copy across network - any ideas?

Hi guys, I'm copying a number of Bluray MKV files from my server to my PC. Both systems are running Windows 7, both have a Gigabit NIC and connected through a Gigabit Switch using CAT6 cables. The PCs are right next to each other. I'm currently getting 22MB/second ie 500Gb transfer is estimated to take around 6 hours. Should this be a lot faster? What sort of transfer rate should I expect?

I've also tried copying across the network onto a portable HDD connected via USB2 and get a similar speed. Again, what sort of speed should I expect?

Cheers,

Jed.

Might be worth checking the LAN status on both computers to make sure you are definitely getting a 1Gb connection.

Check that both NICs are set to Full Duplex in their properties.

Are you running any antivirus or spyware software? It may be slowing things down a little by scanning the files you are transferring.

You could maybe try a crossover cable if all else fails.

Are you using windows file shares/homegroups or FTP?
Go into your NIC configuration, make sure all the offloading options are enabled. Jumbo frames shouldn't matter too much, I get 110MB/s without them using Intel NICs.

I've got a Windows 7 homegroup setup, just copying through Explorer from my Server to the external HDD connected to my PC. I've no idea if this is FTP or not ... or what FTP is :)

I've gone into the Advanced tab on my NIC and selected 1000Mbps Full Duplex for the Speed & Duplex option. What are the offloading options?

EDIT - ahh found some offloading options on my main PC and they are enabled, need to check on my server

This is my switch btw:

EDIT - DON'T LOOK, NOTHING TO SEE HERE ....

Model is a D Link DGS-1005D, go and find it yourself I guess ...

Your transfer speed will depend on the slowest component on the LAN - in this case the USB HDD. Most of the USB 2.0 HHDs have about 25~35MB/s transfer speeds.

Right, my transfer speeds:

Server to PC Jed = 5-10Mbps
Server to PC Bec = 5 -10Mbps
PC Jed to PC Bec = 40+Mbps

So the issue is clearly with the Server ... I'll try some other tests.

EDIT just tried something else:

PC Bec to Server = 25-30Mbps ... seems like the issue is just the one way ie from the Server, not to the Server?

I would remove that link and read the FAQs "No posting links to competitors websites"

Also the TP-Link 5 port is a very good switch http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-011-TP&groupid=46&catid=1626&subcat=

It may be a good switch but it doesn't help in deducing whether the problem I'm having is switch or server related. I apologise to Overclockers if my link has lost them any custom due to my powers of salesmanship and subliminal persuasion. I'll remove the offending link immediately.
