Slow gaming performance after upgrade

I recently upgraded a few components and also switched from xp to windows 7. I tried a game called The Hunter which used to run pretty well before the upgrade but now it stutters and lags badly. The fps occasionally rises and it smooths out a bit but 90% of the time the game is unplayable.

Windows 7 was installed on a brand new Samsung Spinpoint F1. I also upgraded the gfx card from a x1900xt to an 8800GT and stuck in a Corsair VX 450W PSU, which I thought would have enough juice to power it. The graphics card does have an aftermarket cooler attached and I am running an overclocked A64 4000+ and 3 120mm fans along with the hdd and DVD-RW so I'm a bit worried it might be a power problem. Its a quality PSU so I thought it would be enough.

Is it likely to be the psu or could there be something else that is causing the slow gaming performance?

Cheers.

I would suspect it's the game having a compatibilty problem with Windows 7 under what guise though is anyones guess. (i'm having problems with Cryisis for example under a Win7 64 bit environment.)

If you try the game with xp on that setup and still get the same problem only then would i start considering a hardware issue - but i would still be thinking it's driver related with the problems your having.

Have you tried any other games?

EDIT: I suggest you run a dual boot setup - install xp first though.

I've been back to xp and the problem is still there, just to a slightly lesser extent. Under xp its still pretty jerky but not quite as bad, far from ideal though and not really playable.

I have tried numerous different drivers for the 8800GT but the problem persists. I have heard of people having the same kind of problems with this card.

If anyone could help me find a solution I'd be extremely grateful as I've spent hours fiddling about with this.

My full spec:

A64 4000+ (overclocked and not the problem - game in question ran fine on it before upgrade)
2GB RAM
DFI Lanparty Ultra-D
XFX 8800GT Alpha Dog XXX (factory overclocked and with akasa vortexx neo cooler)
Samsung Spinpoint F1 320GB
Corsair VX450w PSU

So its not the psu, thats good. I have tried everything I can think of to fix this problem.

I tried another game and it ran fine, it seems to just be a problem with The Hunter. Its strange that it ran fine before on my x1900xt but really doesn't like my new 8800GT. I've tried numerous different drivers but the jerkyness is still there. I can tell that the game would run fine because in between the jerks the game is nice and smooth.

Win 7 is still really in the Beta stages and even as a release Candidate (or in deed when it is released commercially) it will suffer problems with certain software.

Possible driver issue with that game? I had one with FEAR and a 8800GTX, it would fill up the vram but wouldn't clear it reducing the game to a stuttering mess. No driver revision fixed it nor OS reinstalls etc. Although that was ages ago so it now 'may' work :p Worse case scenario... is there another PC in the house that you can chuck the XT in and play it on that?

Unfortunately not. Your problem with FEAR sounds similar to mine. Theres something The Hunter doesn't like about the combination of my system and the nvidia drivers. I know that some people are playing the game on these drivers without any problems so the problem would appear to be fairly specific.
