as title server is server 2008 r2, pc is windows 7 64bit

Best speeds I can get between them is about 8mb/s

This aint right, I want at least 80mb, iv looked through various online guides for the past 2 hours and nothings working, its defo software, the pcs are 10 ft apart and using short cat 5e cable.

Are you sure it's connected at 1Gbps? If it is what transfer speed do you get if you force it to 100?

Are you running the very latest drivers for both network cards?

Have you got all the latest Windows Updates?

Do you have any custom firewall or other internet software installed? If so disable it.

Have you tried with a different cable (preferably a cat 6 cable)?

Have you enabled jumbo frames if supported?

Same - yes 1gb in both task managers

yes latest i can find for both - one is on a new AMD MSI Fusion M1 board

Have you got all the latest Windows Updates?

Yes both

Disabled, no difference

Yes , same speed :(

Have you enabled jumbo frames if supported?

Yes both have enabled.

Something wrong with the OS it seems, installed windows 7 on the server box now using a spare hard drive and its FAST now like 80/100mb/s

So now performing a full install and going to use windows 7 as the server OS, its fine, does everything I need, which is just a download box and file server on shared folders.

Tried a different cable?

Could be a pair not connected or similar. If you can, test it.

If a pair was not connected it wouldn't be registering as 1gb at either end. It would have either reverted back to 100mb or just not worked, depending on the pair.

To be fair, I must have skimmed the part where you already answered that one :).
Just the 8mb looked suspiciously like a 100mb connection.
