Slow Internet speeds, BT line at fault?

Hello,

I am currently having an issue with my broadband speeds. Initially, I ran a couple of speedtests on various websites and different times of the day and found that I would always get approx 0.1Mbit (10% of my 1Mbit broadband contract).

I contacted Eclipse, my ISP who checked my connection logs and found that a number of connections were dropped and the woman advised that it could be the BT line which has a fault and is throttling the speed to avoid a complete disconnection. She recommended that I check my router, cables, microfilters etc which I have done and found that my router always connects at 0.1Mbits. I have also tested the BT test socket (found when you remove the cover on the main BT socket coming into our house).

I thought that I would seek the advice and comments from you all before I contact Eclipse again to update them. I have tested the connection with multiple routers, cables and microfilters and found that the speed is constantly slow.

So, do you have any advice/comments/suggestions for me before I phone Eclipse again?

Many thanks in advance,

James

For starters, you were never going to get 10Mbps from ADSL.

So what you're saying is your modem's connected at 100kbps? The SNR margin and attenuation your router reports would be useful too.

Hi thanks for your response.

I didn't say I expected 10Mbit, my Eclipse contract is a 1Mbit contract and I'm currently only getting roughly 10% of that, ie. 0.1Mbit.

I have a 3com OfficeConnect ADSL router, here is my info:

I'd also like to add that prior to this happening roughly a week ago, it would run at full speed at 1Mbit (120ish kb/s download and 30ish kb/s upload).

If you need any other info, just let me know.

Thanks again,

James

EDIT: I would also like to add that when I connected up my old Linksys router, the Upstream and Downstream figures were identical to the above screenshot (128kbps and 64kbps). Is this the speed the router is seeing when it connects?

Your downstream data rate is only 128Kbps which is approx one eighth of what is should be set to. Looks like your ISP has you on the wrong profile. Call them, explain this and they should change it for you.

By the way your line stats are pretty damn impressive. You must be very close to your exchange. If ADSL2+ is available in your area you would probably get maximum speeds!!

Good luck with the indian call centers and explaining Ip profile you will need it.
Ip profile should be automatic and sync itself though ?

Hm, I must have misread 1Mbps as 10Mbps...

It's nothing to do with your IP profile - the problem's the fact your modem's connected at 128kbps. There's nothing wrong with your line either (on the contrary, it's very good), Eclipse just need to make sure your target SNR margin gets reset and you're actually on Max.
It sounds like something's gone pretty badly wrong (especially with that low upstream) somewhere, though I wouldn't be surprised if Tiscali LLU has something to do with it (if Eclipse still use that abomination).

Hi JoeMama, Thanks for your reply. I'll give them a call tomorrow and ask them to check this out for me.

I think the exchange is approx 500m away from me which could explain the good stats, i'll need to investigate getting something a lot faster!

Thanks again!

Thanks everyone, I'm going to phone eclipse today and get it sorted. I'm now thinking about switching to another provider. I checked out be there but it's not available in my area so I've been looking at plus net instead. Their £15 a month package seems good and is a fair bit cheaper than what were paying now.

I'll post an update when I get off the phone with eclipse.

Don't bother contacting eclipse just get your MAc and move to o2/be if your exchange is engabled - other wise Good luck!!!"
