Slow movie playback

Having irregular playback issue from the samsung ecogreen HDD, it also causes crashes in some instances, playback is stuttery, and sometimes system stops responding while opening a file from the above mentioned HDD, all the files i've had issues with play fine off any other HDD

Faulty drive?

Could well be, you could download HD Tune to test the performance and check for any bad sectors.

I'll give that a try and see how it goes, would partitioning the HDD down into smaller sizes help? i sometimes get errors transfering files from the HDD

swap out the cables to eliminate them as the cause.
