Slow network transfer rates

I'm getting about 500kbytes/s when transferring files from my desktop to my laptop and vice versa, I download stuff from the internet at 4 times that speed! I know I can't expect massive speeds over wireless but surely I can do better than that. Are there any router or windows settings I can change to make it quicker?

Tried updating your NIC/LAN settings? What OS's are you using?

Cant you plug your laptop in temporarily? Just for troubleshooting, to make sure it runs OK over a cable.
