Slow network transfer speeds

I've got Sky broadband at home using their latest model Sky branded SR101 router. For ages now I've been able to transfer files from my laptop to my PC using Homegroup at speeds of around 8MB/sec, however the last couple of days this has dropped to around 200KB/sec. I've rebooted the router, removed and readded my laptop to the Homegroup and tried shouting at it, but no joy. The only thing that's changed recently in the setup is the addition of a Sky wireless range extender which they very kindly sent me for free. Could this be source of the problems?

Yeh if you are referring to the sky booster for better Wi-Fi signal, it will slower down the broadband speeds unfortunately.

The wireless booster listens for the signal from the router then repeats it on the same frequency. It's effectively halving the wireless bandwidth by sharing the channel. I use one for streaming to the Xbox in the bedroom, but it gets turned off when it's not in use.

There's no substitite for a bit of CAT5. ;)

It doesn't half it, it massacres it.

I'm pretty sure it's limited to 2-3mb/s transfer, terrible bit of kit.

It was free and it means I can get WiFi in my bedroom, so I wouldn't describe it as 'terrible'. I'll just turn it off when I need to transfer files between machines - or use a cable as MagicBoy suggested... sorted :)

I'll run a speedtest later, see what it happens*. It streams Netflix in HD OK for me, which is all I need.

* Might not be that representative as I live in an apartment block so there's a lot of congestion on 2.4GHz with 15+ networks visible. I use a 5GHz network for all the capable devices, it's only the old XBox that isn't.
