Recently our we changed packages on our ISP to an 80Mbps down 10Mbps up package.

Part of that was that they sent us a new cable modem because the old one's were not able to handle the new speeds.

At the same time we changed our router as well because the old one did not have wireless on it and my wife really wanted it for her laptop.

Now the wierdness kicks in.

I have a PC under the stairs which acts as a server for our 2 media streamers. (living room and bedroom)

Very often I will transfere files between it and my main machine and I have noticed that they seem to take a very long time to transfere.

I recently installed windows 7 on my PC so now I can get an actual speed reading of the transfere, it seems that it is only transfereing accross the network at 900 kbps - 1 mbps.

This seems very slow for a 100Mbps network.

What factors could be affecting the speed?

Also wierd is the fact that the wireless only ever connects at 54Mbps when both the router and laptop are 150N, wifes not really bothered though as she only uses her laptop for browsing.

and at the risk of dragging this thread further, we were informed that some time later in the year our ISP would be upgrading our line to 120Mbps down which is obviously faster than the current router. is it worth buying another router for the extra 20Mbps that it would give?
