Well the story is that wenever i start my pc up it is really slow (lik 10 minutes) to go from the 'select a user' screen to actually loading up and me being able to do things on it. It will load my desktop and icons etc but takes ages until i am actually being able to use my pc.

Rather an annoying problem. My basic system specs are:
p4 2.5ghz
768mb ram
asus 6800nu
running window xp home

thx for any help.

I just usually run daily spyware scans/tuneup utilities proceses to keep my system in tact and it loads up fine
But if the problem still gets too much you could always move all your files to your shared doccuments, make a new user, then transfer the files to that user.
I did it the other day, took a cupple of minutes at the most.

RE:

Desktop clutter? Do you have thousands of destkop clutter? Move it all away.

Uneeded processes running? Hows your sys tray? Thousands of icons? Kill them.

RUN > MSCONFIG > STARTUP

Deselect everything apart from your virus checker and firewall. You dont really need anything else. Serious.

Likewise with processes

RUN > SERVICES.MSC

You can get away with running on around 10-15 processes. Some people take this to the extreme, but around 10-15 retains functionality.

You could also try the following

a) Check for free space on your drive. Too little and it will increase your load time

b) Completely remove your page file, and then create another fixed page file. (This cures any fragmented page file problems you may have)

c) Before you do b, make sure you defrag your drive anyway, ensuring that you have roughly 10% free space, (see a)

Or the killer method

d) Nlite your Windows XP, slimstream, add drivers, and do a fresh install. Then only ever install programs you will use. Dont install demo's, really naff utils, or anything else other than your main programs and any favourite games.

D usually never fails!
