Slow PSN downloads?

Afternoon chaps,

Does anyone experience really slow PSN downloads? Im on a 20mb connection and always see 2mb+/sec download speeds via Xbox 360 and PC but for some reason downloads from PSN dont seem to get any higher than about 300k/sec, probably averaging around 120k/sec region.

I was wondering if theres any ports that need to be open or anything that needs to be done to speed things up? I realise its a free service and I shouldnt expect any better but would be nice to see if its something my end thats causing problems. Online gaming is fine, UPnP is available and the PSN connection test always shows me as NAT type 2, it just seems to be download speeds that are a problem.

Thanks in advance.

I *heard* there's some kind of issue with Virgin Media and PSN that affects download speeds. I also get slow speeds

Same problem here, on the top tier with Virgin Media and PSN downloads are worse then being on dial-up. (thats when I can connect).

360 and PC downloads are perfect.

Have talked to virgin & they tell me nothing is wrong. (yeh right), thats why nearly evrybody I know on Virgin complain about PSN downloads

And it begins, England end up behind in technological evolution due to people not wanting to change their restrictions.

Virgin, Get a grip! It's not just you guys btw, Someone I know on another forum has moved ISP due to it

Your guess is as good as mine, but I think I remember VM giving free Xbox Live subscriptions to new users.

took me more than 6 hours to download the Burnout demo. what a joke

I've just been looking at bt which is already better than the phone/broadband we have with vm at the moment its about £10+ less and even Sky looks better.. even if sky isn't the full 16mb a month which some people say its still got be better than VM's 4mb for £25!! thats not even including phone! Our contract has run out with VM and i'm thinking more and more about changing ISP everyday and it should be really easy to pursuade my mum to pay upto £15-25 less than we are now.

I use them and downloads are faster than standard broadband (distance from exchange permitting), and it is a really unlimited service (no port throttling/blocking/restrictions 24/7). For downloading conventional stuff from PC, ps3, to 360, I have had some slow 260 downloads, but I am convinced this was at Microsoft's end and was only short term.

May be worth seeing if you can get the same service through O2 (if you have an O2 mobile) it may work out cheaper and you end up on the same ADSL2+ service and same backend network (O2 own bethere).

Whats to stop BE from starting to traffic shape and throttle though? Especially as there popularity and subscriber base expands massively. Ive been completely out of the BT loop for years now, I have no idea.

In the grander scheme of things (as an LLU based ISP) they have a comparatively small number of users. Having known people using their service for about 2 years, their preferred method of coping with extra user, so far, (shock horror) has been to purchase more capacity and manage their network better.

As you say, there is nothing stopping them changing this overnight, but the same can be said of any ISP, to an extent you have to go with reputation and past experience, as on a technical front, not much separates these ADSL/ADSL2+ based ISPs.

I have used a few ADSL ISPs and know of many people who I have helped etc with different ones, and so far, BE is the best I have used, from a speed reliability point of view (having said that I personally have only been on the service around 6 monthsish... (I think) ).

Thanks for the explanation. I think im 100% going to go down the Sky/ADSL route when I move house. Ive only really kept with NTL/VM because of the broadband but its slowly starting to fall behind ADSL now.

BeThere rock.
I've been with them for a year and no problems at all.
Moving with Be can be a pain but it's not there fault, it's BT and LLU.
I get very fast speeds as well, the Mrs can be using the net for various things, I'll be doing a hefty fast download and still no lag when using XBL or PSN.
I highly recommend them.

What kind of download and upload speeds do you get (on the PC)? On what package?

I'm on their Home package.
My connection is : Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,325 / 13,048
That works out about 1.3mb/s on download when its maxed out but I've never paid much attention to the upload speed to be honest.
I know we can't talk about certain things on here but on a certain peer to peer based service I can seed quite quickly (compared to the previous 256 upload connection I had)on a decent site.
Before we moved I was quite close to the exchange and that gave me a max download of 1.9mb/s

Damn this makes me want to move. Virgin Media only gives 30kb/s upload. I do a lot of web work so it would be very helpful

I am on the same service and sync at 14,569 down / 1,334 up.

In practice downloads max out at 1.3mb a sec (depending on other end) and uploads are near the 150k a sec mark.
