Slow PSN downloads?

I am with Virgin Media 20meg and haven't experienced any slow network traffic on the PSN at all. I can watch the downloads come down at a nice 1-2MBps easily.

What router are you using, if any?

Any ports forwarded or special settings?

Nope no ports forwarded for the PS3. It isn't even in the DMZ.

Just done an update in the PSN thread about port forwarding may help if not stick it in the DMZ.

I have big problmes with VM on my PS3 can only play online in the mornings the shaping kills me in the evenings, dowloads are not very fast at all. My sky BB 4Mb was always a lot faster than my 20Mb Virgin one lol!

Shaping only comes in to effect if you download more than 3GB between the hours of 16:00 - 21:00 now.

It's changed recently?

As it used to be 500mb in peak hours on a 4mb connection, 1gb in peak hours on the 8mb connection. And even less on the 2mb connections.

Yeah they have made some changes to the time of day. I think the download policies are still the same though. It's all on their website.

If you download more than a certain amount of data in a specified time period, they "fix" your connection at a lower speed for a certain amount of time. Technically it is not shaping as such. Shaping would be if they restricted speeds on certain protocols or ports, but the exact definition is not important.

i.e. You are on a 20mb/512k connection you download 1gb in 3 hours they then fix you to 5mb/128k for 6 hours as a "punishment". Then you go back to your normal speed.

The exact figures are made up, just to illustrate. Different ISPs manage it differently. (Virgin Media manage it as I have explained in the example, just with different figures to my made up ones).

A few ADSL based ISPs do this, and Virgin Media do this across their platform as well. In my opinion only substandard ISPs who just want to cut costs do this, rather than proactively manage your customer base and bandwidth requirements, but I digress.
