Hi, i'm fairly new to pc gaming and brought a pre built which runs fine but I'm having speed issues and graphics problems in games such as fortnite, only able to run smoothly on medium graphics quality, I'm wanting to eventually be able to play games like hogwarts legacy but at the moment i dont think this pc could take it. heres what im currently running on. (I'm willing to spend the money to upgrade and also worth nothing I'm running on ethernet.)
Mother board - MSI B450M PRO VDH MAX.
CPU - AMD RYZEN 5 3500X 6 CORE
GPU - RADEON (TM) RX 480
RAM - CORSAIR VENGEANCE PRO 16GB DDR4 3600

Something like an rx 6600 would be a pretty solid gpu upgrade for not much money. Cpu is fine for gaming but not amazing, 5600x or even 5800 x3d would be viable upgrade options. But I would focus on the gpu first. The rx 480 is a bit of a legend budget gpu but it's getting on for 7 years old now

Fortnite performance is kind of a mess at the moment, between dx 11, dx12, and "performance" there are so many strange ways to configure it. A few months back I was setting up on a laptop and in dx11 and performance mode low setting its was a stuttery mess, but dx 12 medium/high and I was getting 100+ fps. Equally have a system that barely runs in dx11 or 12, but is buttery smooth in performance mode.

I would try switching between those and seeing which if any better suits the system

its 2x gb
I would download MSI afterburner and see what's going on when stutters occur checking, CPU, GPU, memory, etc .

If you want an upgrade then as others have mentioned GPU would be a good choice an rx 6600 would double your FPS over the rx 480.

thank you i'll look into upgrading the gpu i think, also having issues if anything else is open on my pc the stutter is so much worse, it cant seem to handle multi tasking if a game is open and discord/twitch, would that be anything linked to the fact im running on hard drive and not SSD? i heard SSD is better for speed/ multitasking?

How much memory is being used when that happens?

Do you have your browser open too, or just discord/twitch? Have you tried toggling hardware acceleration on/off?

Start by upgrading your graphics card to at least a rx6600 and see how it goes. Your ram is ideal for that CPU and amount is decent, you may be tempted to get more since ram is cheap but I don't think it will help in the games you play.
