Slow single connections

Got a weird problem with the ADSL at our office recently.

Basically, single connections absolutely crawl. Whether it's downloading a file or accessing a web page, it's painfully slow. If we use a download manager or other means to open multiple connections, the total bandwidth is much much better.

For example, I was trying to download a file earlier and it was running at around 2KB/s. I fired up a download manager and had 10 simultaneous connections to the file and it was then running at a total of around 300KB/s.

BT are claiming everything is fine, despite numerous speed test websites giving derisory results. They're just taking the "we've checked and there's no problem" line. Does anyone have any ideas what could cause problems like we're having? BT are claiming there might be a problem at our end yet we've unplugged everything bar a single machine and the results are the same. They're now whittling on about chaning the micro filters but they wouldn't have suddenly broken and wouldn't be getting more bandwidth with multiple connections if these were the problem. Basically our total bandwidth, when multiple connections are in use, is fine, just single connections crawl.

Any help appreciated.

You'd be surprised how many people are sure that their hardware couldn't possibly be at fault, then discover it is.
Proving it isn't anything your side of the master socket is the first step to getting fixed.
