Tonight I noticed that my download speed when downloading from Giganews was unusually low. I thought that it maybe my connection so I checked my sync speed and it was 13949 kbits, where as Giganews download speed was around 300-400 k/sec. I tried a download from Gamershell and I was getting my sync speed. I have sent Giganews an email, but I dont think that it will be at their end, I think I maybe being capped/shaped but this has never happened to me before, I am with BeThere btw.

How can I tell if its Be or something else or together.

Thanks

It's unlikely you've been getting capped/shaped on Be, though they do sometimes have short-lived contention issues.

I had similar problems with o2 and giganews but astraweb seems to be full speed so I suspect giganews is having issues at the moment.

I didnt think it would be either of them to be honest.

If someone could be kind enough to try the speedtest on Giganews site, try both servers and post their results and their connection speed I would be most grateful.

Speedtest link is here http://www.giganews.com/performance.html

UPDATE

I have just noticed this on the Reverse Traceroute section on the Giganews site, could someone please explain what it means, thanks again

Strange, I have received a reply from Giganews and they said everything is fine at their end.

i'm having similar problems on 02, was 1mb + this morning now 200-300k/s

edit:

Ran speed test on the europe-news.giganews.com and found a result of 268kbps

Mine has just this minute gone to my full sync speed, coincidence that its after 12am?

earlier on I was using Giganews +Be and it was going slower (800KB) than this morning (1.8MB) - So I switched to my old Usenetserver account, which I haven't bothered to cancel yet, and got that going 1.8MB straight away.

My Verdict: Giganews problem.

Strange as others have tried different providers and had the same problem the be forum.

Its certainly a minimum routing issue as not all providers are effected by this.

I'm with O2 and my connection to Powerusenet normally gives me approx 13mb download speed from a 16mb sync. Last night saw this fall and fluctuate between 1-3mb download from these servers. Interestingly, the server connections were to Giganews servers (which I believe Powerusenet uses) and the speed was fine again after midnight! I spoke with O2 earlier in the evening , they performed their checks and said my connection was fine. Problem with Giganews??

I had the exact same issue last night with Giganews and Be*. Havent had a chance to try it today however.

Definately an issue somewhere though!

Got home and there appears to still be an issue as im now getting roughly 700k when i should be getting around 1700k

somewhat annoying...

is this issue still going on as I'm getting very slow speed on giganews and i'm with nildram pro 16mb adsl2+, this is a business service so i doubt i'm getting throttled

so i wonder if some isps are throttling the ports which giganews runs on ?

Coincidence as i'm with BT and have been getting pathetic speeds all week when downloading via giganews. Thought it was BT capping me as i've been downloading heavily recently, maybe not. Then again, i notice that in the morning (before i leave for work at 8am) i get normal speeds downloading from giganews, but when i try to download when i get home in the evenings (after 6pm) it's pathetic again, hovering around 60KBps.
