Slow Start Up After Logging Into Windows

I need a little help with my system.

I run a (at the moment stock) Athlon X4 640 3ghz Quad Core (AM3) processor with 4GB Corsair DDR3 1333mhz memory on an ASRock M3N78D motherboard and my system is somewhat slow on start up after logging in with my password.

Once I log in my system is really slow at loading up and I have to wait around 2 minutes before I can use it.

I have used MSCONFIG to configure what I want loading up at start up:

Other programs that launch that are not in that list include the normal MSI Afterburner and Open Hardware Monitor.

I have the bios set to default settings and have cleared the bios, but everything seems to be slow.

I don't understand it and to make matters worse, my partners Pentium E5700 and DDR3 1333mhz (downclocked to 800mhz thanks to the LGA775 socket limitations) starts up a lot faster, which is getting on my nerves.

My main hard drive is a SATA 2 500GB with a 50GB partition for windows. I got it out of my old Sky HD Box, formatted it and slung it in as my new main drive as my back up 160gb didn't like having windows installed on it.

Have I done something wrong or is there actually something wrong with my system?

I have spent quite a bit of money on it over the past year and don't want an old dual core beating it, but mainly it's just annoying.

I would turn of steam and windows messenger from the msconfig above. Download and run CCleaner. Then a good defrag using Defraggler. That should improve things.

Hey, thanks for that advice, I ain't used CCleaner for a while lol. I usually defrag using the windows version. Is Defraggler any good, or better than the windows version?

Plus, when I am on my PC I am a heavy gamer and regularly play Steam games like MW3 and Portal 2, so I need it open, plus I am on msn most of the time when not working or with the misses.

I have ran a chkdsk /f and it seems fine. Also I have a IDE 300GB which is only used for music, video and photo back up. I don't run any programs off it.

How is it after the initial two minutes? Does everything speed up and work fine?

I presume the drive is in question is a Sata?

My main drive is a sata, partitioned with a 50gb for windows and 450gb for programs and games = 500gb, a sata slave for games which is a 160gb and a 300gb ide for music, photos and videos with no programs installed on it.

After the 2 minutes, it is fine, just the initial start up.

Try disconnecting your data drives, just leave your Boot drive installed. Try booting up now and see what happens. Obviously turn off the machine before disconnecting the drives.

lmao, of course. The most stupid thing I ever done is take my system apart, put my arctic freezer 7 pro rev 2 cooler back on and not plug the fan in lol... didn't notice until open hardware monitor showed an idle cpu temp of 80C lol

ill try that tomorrow but i just run ccleaner and running defraggler now on a quick defrag, see if that has any difference

also question:

i bought a roccat kova plus gaming mouse, well my misses did lol, and i did use the software for it, which made my system slow anyways, but now i disabled it from running on start up, but my mouse has the same settings... could that be slowing it down at all?

Not plugging in the CPU fan shouldn't make any difference to how slow or how quick your machine goes. All it will do is make your CPU very hot. It shouldn't have gotten past POST without that plugged in? No warnings? Beeps? Very strange it never alerted you.

Any program currently active will have a small bearing on system responsiveness. However, with 4GB ram, a sensible processor and a decent hard drive. It's certainly nothing to concern yourself with.

lmao, I was just quoting something stupid I did stupidly once because you said turn my system off first lol

Well my HDD only has a 8mb cache I found out if I am correct. Buffer Size: 8192K and a rotation speed of 5900rpm, which even I think maybe a little bad.

Ah... Maybe I should learn to read from top to bottom and not the other way around. Oh dear!

It doesn't sound great, I must say. Ah well. For the first two minutes, just go and pour yourself a drink. Problem solved.

So your saying the reason this is happening is because my primary hard drive is too slow? It's a freakin' sata 2 for gods sake! My old dual core rig was faster at start up!

Ah tea! My religion! Should make up the 2 minutes hopefully.

and lol at your mistake xD
