The welcome screen stays up with blue loading circle for a while, and the I get black screen for quite a time as well.

However, when I log in with a different account on the same machine (same admin rights etc), it is nearly instant login.

msconfig shows not much on startup

and there isn't anything except for logitech setpoint in the startup directory.

Anyone suggest why this is happening? It has only just started and I'm not sure why. I had just updated some ati drivers/software but now all of that has been uninstalled and I'm now running on windows automatically installed driver.

Anything showing in the eventlog as the user logs in? Sometimes it's something daft like a mapped share they used ages ago which has been deleted or a very daft permissions problem.

Try bumping them to admin permissions and logging in to see if it helps at all.

latest event at the top
Code:
The winlogon notification subscriber <SessionEnv> was unavailable to handle a notification event.
Windows license validated.

The Desktop Window Manager has exited with code (0x40010004)

-> trouble shooting showed no problems

Event log doesn't help much here I think because it is the same for the 'fast login' user and the slow one.

ahh, looks like it is connected to my NAS drive which I have turned off atm.

I only have it mapped to local drive letter on the troublesome account
