slow sync speeds on belkin router

I think ive posted this problem here a while back but the situation is slightly different.

Have had this belkin router for roughly 18 months now, and ive recently discovered that it was in fact this router that was the cause of our slow downstream sync speeds, not talktalk. To cut to the chase, i RMA'd it, got the replacement today (very efficient RMA service from belkin might i add), and i have exactly the same problems.

Using a three year old phillips router and a generic huawei router from talktalk im able to get downstream speeds in the region of 2.5Mbits. With the belkin this speed is typically <1Mbit. The only difference in settings that i can see is that the belkin is running in ADSL2 mode and the other two run in ADSL2+ mode. Cant find an option to change it on the belkin though.

Evidently something aint playing ball here, but networking is not my forte, so long story short(ish) ... help!

I find that dlink 2640b's tend to sync higher that most routers, I put them on suspect lines that the old router kept loosing sync on to resolve the issue (where the ISP is not willing to resolve the issue)

so its probably down to the different chipset

so you're telling me that a (what was at the time) £90 router uses an inferior chipset to a generic £15 one, to the tune of roughly 60%?

why not use the router that runs fastest?

jsut because its expensive does not mean its better...

have you flashed the latest firmware onto the belkin?

Entirely possible, Cisco charge £350 for their HWIC ADSL2+ line cards, typically I get a higher sync rate out of a £20 ZyXel :)

because,
a) we paid quite a lot for it so frankly, it should work.
b) We make use of the USB port for quick and easy NAS.
c) We have quite a long house, and the older routers dont cover it very well. (my pc's wifi seems to be right on the border with the older ones and flakes out from time to time, but not with the belkin)

yes ive flashed the firmware

ive finally figured out how to bridge the routers together (currently the phillips is being the modem and the belkin is doing the routing.) to solve problem c and possibly b, but this is hardly ideal in my eyes.

Any thoughts on the whole ADSL2/ADLS2+ thing? Dont have a clue what that means tbh...

They're probably the same thing. I'd ditch the Belkin as it probably uses a horrible chipset.

well ive had the response from belkin, they've given me another RMA ticket and postage stamp and said they'll send one of the newer models out (the 'share' one). hope this uses a different chipset...

Gotta admit, their routers might be a load of rubbish, but their returns/RMA aint half bad. This took half a day from initial contact to receiving the ticket with about 3 emails back and fourth in between

I suppose they're probably good at RMA's as they probably do a lot of them :p

Talktalk Dslam usualy uses the Huawei with Infineon Chipset or the Ar7,

the Belkin router you use has the broadcom chipset.

This is the reason the Belkin router is syncing slower.

eh? i thought broadcom were supposed to be one of the best?

so do you happen to know whats in the 'share' (F7D3402UK)?

The BC chipset is one of the best yes, But it only works well if the Dslam in the exchange is the same chipset.
