Slow usenet speed?

Over the last few days, I've noticed that my usenet speeds seem to have dropped significantly. Speedtest shows my download speed at 10Mb, which is what it should be. However, I was only getting about 100kb/s trying to download from the virgin media provided newsgroup.

I'm using grabit, 3 threads as Its apparently supposed to be set to, and it sits about 100kb/s. It used to max out my connection just fine, too, so something must have just happened.

Any way I can troubleshoot, try and find what's causing the problems?

What time of the day are you downloading as I know Virgin now throttle p2p and usenet traffic

I was throttled to death in the evening from 50 down to 2.5 but I changed my port number and getting full speeds now.
Somebody in the Virgin 50 meg thread said 'Everybody knew port 563 is being throttled'.
I didn't but I'm on 443 now with one server and 8080 with another.

Unfortunately VM's free service (provided by Highwinds Media) is only accessible on port 119, with no SSL. It does sound as though you're being throttled.

OP, get yourself a decent paid-for service (Astraweb is cheap if you google for the $11 Kleverig deal) and connect to the SSL server over port 443. You should be fine then. On a side note, 3 connections is a bit low even for a 10Mb connection. Try 5.

Some providers can have up to 60 connections....it's a good manner to download quickly !

There is rarely a need for that many connections. Most providers who offer that many connections just do it to show off and try and out do their competitors.

I don't need anywhere near that many connections or threads to max out my my download, I think Astraweb offer 20 connections, however 10 or 12 will be fine for me :)

Could probably easily get away with less than that to be honest.
