Slow VPN performance through a new router - Possibly router at fault

Hi all,

I use PrivateInternetAccess VPN client on Windows 10 and never used to have any issues with it.

My BT home hub 5 stopped working, so on black friday I replaced it with a Netgear Nighthawk D7000.

Since replacing it, I've noticed the VPN performance is very slow, youtube videos (and facebook videos) taking ages to load, ending up with buffering.

If I disconnect the VPN client it all works fine.

Also if I run a speedtest, I get about 20Mbps down without the VPN, with it turned on I end up with about 16Mbps (expectable) but the strange thing is that the test takes MUCH longer because for the majority of the test the speed is down at about 1Mbps (starts off high then quickly drops to this), slowly climbing back to a reasonable speed

Anyone know what might be the cause for this or any investigation route? It seems to be struggling with the VPN traffic for some reason.

I haven't yet had the chance to try another router, but as said, I've only noticed this since changing the router which is odd... because if anything, it should be much better than the HH5

Poor VPN performance could be a MTU issue.

Would this normally need tweaking on the router?

Never really looked into MTU much

Could this be a good test?

What time did you perform the tests when you connected your new router? I am a PIA user and find the servers (Especially London) can suffer from performance issues at peak times.

It was around midnight

PIA also suggested lowering MTU to around 1400

It was on 1458 but lowering to 1400 had no noticeable effect unfortunately

Will see if they have any more suggestions
