Slow Windows Installation??

Not sure if i'm posting this in the right place so apologies if i'm not.

I've just been trying to install Windows XP on my new HD and it seems to run really slow. Firstly, the initial boot takes much longer than usual....then when I press "Enter" to agree to install windows XP it just sits there with a blank blue screen for ages until suddenly the HD or CD kicks in and the License Agreement will appear.

The same thing appeared to happen when I tried to install Vista instead on it....it would load up, then sit there with a blank Vista background for ages until the CD-drive or HD seemed to kick in and the language menu appears.

I have no idea why it is doing this. I recently bought the HD because my old one was running very slowly....now i'm wondering if something else is the problem....but everything else in my computer (except the PSU) is only a couple of months old.
Also with installing things from CD, it seems to take a very long time....as if the CD-Drive is just being lazy and only really 'reading' at max speed occasionally.

Any ideas what this could be? Is this normal for a windows installation?

Cheers for any help. (My PC Specs below)

Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 3.0ghz
Samsung Spinpoint SATA II 500gb
Geforce 8800 GTS 320
Abit IP35 Pro
Pioneer DVD/CD RW drive

Ok cheers for the advice. I've done some benchmarking tests on my HD but i'm not sure what to make of the results.

I also ran the Passmark Software:

Anyone see anything out of the ordinary?? The Hard Drive benchmark seems a bit strange (with the seemingly random sudden dips on the graph).

Also my Passmark score of 956 doesn't seem particularly impressive considering my system....is that CPU score normal for my E6850?

btw i forgot to mention in my first post that I have 2gb RAM

Thanks for any help anyone can offer....i'm completely stuck as to what the problem is.

How much RAM do you have? I read something yesterday while looking at drivers for my P5K Premium on Asus' support site about Windows installing slowly on systems with 4GB Ram and the recommendation was to take it down to 2GB for the install then put the rest back in. Your motherboard's also P35 so my guess would be to try that if you have >2GB.
