slow wired connection virgin media

having a few issues with my desktop

currently running gigabit from virgin media which is blazingly fast over wifi but on my wired connection i'm struggling to pull down 3 meg a second on downloads

vm hub shows connection is 1000meg checking adaptor status shows connected at 1.0 gbps and wifi speeds are somewhere aroud 7-800 meg/second

any suggestions on what to try to resolve?
 
First thing to try would be to change the ethernet cable. Next thing to try would be to try connecting another ethernet device to the VM hub and copy some data between the desktop and the other device to see how fast the data transfers over.
 
Assuming you understand that the routing/peering to the remote host and the ability to send data is dependant on the remote hosts connectivity, what does a speedtest show? Also when you say ‘adapter’ you are talking about a NIC and not something awful like powerline aren’t you?
 
What speeds do you get if you download whatever you are over a WiFi connection. Need to first rule out the source of the download being slow externally. If WiFi speeds are similar then it's unlikely to be a "wired" connection issue.

A couple of things you could try depending on what you have available.
- Download the same content from the same source on two devices at the same time (one wired and one wireless)
- Depending on how your device is connected to the VM Hub (switches/powerline adapters etc) for testing, plug it directly into the VM hub
- Try a different ethernet cable
- Try a different port
- Do you have two devices you can connect via Ethernet to check whether the download is slow on them both, or just one.

Next steps depends on the outcome of the above.
 
doesnt seem to be a hub or cable issue,

connected the same pc up using wireless and struggling along at 30/40 meg sitting next to the router.

iphone in the same room is pulling north of 350 meg/second do definitely a device issue.


Just checked with a usb - c ethernet adaptor macbook pulls a solid 350 meg a second, desktop plugged in using the same usb - c dongle 18 meg

any suggestions?
 
speedtest.net on a local server

all sorted now, quick windows restore and we're pulling 980meg download speeds. much better :)
