Quick bit of advice here guys, i've just got some new stuff for my pc and started installing xp but i've noticed that it seems a little slow on the SATA in comparison to my previous IDE setup.

Board is an MSI K9AGM2-FIH and the drive is a WD Caviar 80gb SATA 8mb Cache.

Now i set the SATA ports to legacy IDE as i recall XP doesn't take kindly to the SATA drive when its set to native, is this true?

Can anyone help me speed things up a bit.

Well i got xp installed after about 40mins which wasn't as long as i was expecting but now i'm noticing that booting up takes ages (the xp boot bar loads 10 times) compared to my IDE setup, is there something i am missing?

I've just installed xp on my new C2D set up which has 2 250gb maxtor sata drives in it.

Took about 20 minutes after doing a complete (not quick) ntfs format.

When I chose to do a quick format it didn't like it at all and as you said took ages to boot.

Don't know which option you chose but this is probably the case as it was with me :)

Yeah runs perfectly. In fact it booted faster from a fresh full format than it did when I did a quick format.

I was really surprised at the difference so now I've decided to NEVER do a quick format.

Hmm... i may have to try that as a last resort, i've never really had issues with the quick format option on other computers i've worked with.

Incidently what is AHCI as it is a SATA option along with native IDE, legacy IDE and raid. I set it to use it in the bios but it gets to the 2nd boot bar and reboots the computer, so i put it back to native.
