I need to throttle a computer without using software which can be closed or bypassed. Ive set the network card to half duplex and an 8k buffer but thats not enough of a reduction. Is there any easy way to slow it down some more?

The network card is Realtek 8139 and router is speedtouch 510

Its just to try and control downloads during peak times. My isp is being a git and me politely asking people not to use a 8 meg connection doesnt really work
I downloaded a 100 meg file in 5 minutes last night (off peak), if people do that during peak times too much the connection gets put onto an awfull feed by the isp

Presently the alternative is to use netlimiter and also I manually turn off upnp on the router to try and slow p2p.

I was hoping some firmware might exist or at least some non visible software at the driver level maybe to throttle it. Even better if it could adjust according to the time of day

Have you tried Port Blocking on the router?

You should be able to use netlimiter to get the ports that p2p uses then set up a rule on the router to block all traffic on said ports during your ISP's peak hours.
Granted that doesn't really help HTTP and FTP downloads. The only way around that is to do what I've done and stick a PC running netlimiter between the modem and the router. That will give you full throttling capabilities.

HTH

I havent tried specifically port blocking, I'll see how upnp goes. Half the problem is myspace, etc they can download 10 meg every few mins just browsing which apparently makes us a heavy user then..

I'll consider the spare machine thing, I do have a 233mmx rig :o

It might be easier to get a fancier router that can alter the SNR ratio, if I raise that high enough the dsl should only connect at a much lower speed which would do the job nicely really.

Pity I cant just put a really bad line filter on there to create lots of noise for the same effect :D

Ive seen QOS before but not really used it. Its loaded by default with windows but I dont think the router sees it. Would any linksys router do the job?

I took filters off the line and put the fax machine and telephone before the adsl modem.
So now instead of a perfect 8100 sync I have:
xDSL linestate up (downstream: 2912 kbit/s, upstream: 448 kbit/s)

with a SNR of 6

I tried to make it drop even further but its a bit crude and I think the signal fails alltogether, I left it to try a sync for 5 mins and it didnt manage anything.

Unfortunately its still not low enough to be a proper restriction but it should stop someone wasting our weeks peak allowance in half an hour.

Ive read about ISPs that will put you on 256k if you exceed the allowance, sounds like good sense compared to ours.

I know radios can cause interference, can magnets do similar ?

You really don't want to be messing with the speed the modem syncs at and making it drop/change speed too often as it'll confuse the line management system at the exchange and you'll end up stuck on a lower BRAS for a while or with interleaving turned on, neither of which you really want if you can help it.

Bear in mind it won't be as simple as removing those devices to go back up to the normal IP rate. You're probably now looking at a 3 day wait to get away from the 2.5Mbps limit.
As already suggested, you really want either a router that'll do it, or software installed on the machines to do it.

Its loaded by default with windows but I dont think the router sees it.

Not the same sort of QoS - Windows' QoS is a lot more crude (AFAIK). Open to correction though.

Would any linksys router do the job?

Not really. Ideally you want a WRT54GL (which would connect between the users and the ST510, I guess) and would do time of day traffic shaping and whatever else you wanted, courtesy of open source firmware - www.linksysinfo.org is your friend.

I found a program called netpeeker that limits bandwidth quite well. Netlimiter interferes with steam so this is a good alternative I think plus you can password it to stop people cirumventing it
