On the windows log on screen, when i click a name to log on (me/mum or sis) it accepts the click, then stays on that screen for a good 2-3minutes,and then loads up the desktop etc :S?

Its never done this before and always loaded straight away within seconds?
It started about two week ago and i hadnt changed any settings?

edit: ive also checked for spyware viruse's

Are you on a network with mapped drives?

Looking for these can severely slow the boot process.

Disable all unused network adapters (e.g. Firewire) and check the TCP/IP configuration of those that you do use. If DHCP (automatic) is enabled then ensure there is no problem with your DHCP server.

Anyone want to talk me through it as i dont really know much about DHCP etc :o

I dont use a router either just so you know, only this computer, no network

Won't be a problem with your network or anything then! DHCP is simply a protocol that assigns IP addresses to different networked devices. Sometimes if there's a problem with the DHCP server (can be a dedicated server, or just the router)... then this can cause problems.

As has been said, try creating a new user account... are there any programs that load up at the start that could be causing slowdown?

Start > Run > msconfig .. go to the startup tab

Uncheck any program you don't want loading at startup, that'l make boot a lot faster.

No, you don't do that at all. Unticking boxes there would cause windows to boot up into a diagnostics mode. Instead, use msconfig to see what's starting up and then remove the appropriate entries from the registry for the one's you don't want :)

Seriously? :s

I've done that for years, when I untick a box that program doesn't load anymore when windows boots... am I missing something? They defiently don't load as they aren't showing in the system processes..and I swear I'm not in any diagnostic mode :p

Yep :)

It does stop them from loading but you are in diagnostics mode- normally you would get a window up everytime you boot telling you this but there is an option you can tick to get rid of the window :)
