I've got an old Compaq Presario V5002ea and I was hoping that someone else may have something silimar.

yes at 5 years old it's still going although showing it's age somewhat now, my plans for it are:
1) new IDE hard drive - 160GB or thereabouts.
2) increase the memory to 2GB
3) include a express card usb3.0 card (something like this: http://uk.startech.com/Cards-Adapte...ard-SuperSpeed-USB-3-Card-Adapter~ECUSB3S254F)

As I do mixing I am also considering a USB sound card to the laptop.

I've also been considering replacing the CPU with a faster one however i'm unsure what I can get, Currently it has an AMD sempron-m 3000+
What would any of you reccomend to do to my againg gracefuly laptop to keep it running sweet.

Here is a list of parts it's already had:
replacement battery
increase in memory to 1.5GB
replacement DVD-RW

Windows gets re-installed about once a year to keep that fresh

Cheers all

I'm not too clued up on older AMD laptop chips, but is the Sempron the 'budget' chip - so something like an Athlon 64 X2 TK-58 would be an upgrade? You can pick those up pretty cheap.

I wouldn't bother with an IDE hard drive, stick in an SSD. I wouldn't bother with a USB3 card.. why do you think you need one? Can't comment on the sound card as I don't know what mixing you do.

Can you get an IDE SSD for a reasonable ammount?
does the Athlon 64x2 utilise the same socket as the sempron in my machine?

The reason behind a USB3 card is due to only having 2 USB ports and personally wanting more, as USB3 devices are appearing more often now I may as well get a USB3 card now instead of having to upgrade at a later date thus saving money in the long run.
