Sluggish PC

Since a recent format and fresh install of XP, I've found that CPU usage rockets upto 99% whenever I'm installing applications or games, unzipping/unraring files uses 99% CPU and everything takes far longer than it did before - it took me about two hours to install WoW this afternoon, takes me half an hour ordinarily.

I've reformatted once in an attempt to solve this problem but to no avail. Everything was running swimmingly until last Saturday when I purchased and installed a router so I could play online with my X-Box 360 whilst having my PC online as well. After switching off the PC, it wouldn't switch on - it didn't POST, the fans and motherboard showed that power was there but nothing happened.

I took apart my PC and rebuilt it from scratch and subsequently, boot attempts would result in a successful POST but Windows would not load. After an epic struggle to reinstall XP, I managed to get into Windows and back up what was neccesary to keep. One of my old HDD's was on it's last legs so I took this opportunity to replace it.

So having successfully saved the important files, I reformatted and reinstalled XP again - a totally fresh install, making 100% sure that I had the latest drivers, software and firmware beforehand.

However, as I've said everything is far slower - even Quake 3 will barely run. The same hardware, operating system and drivers that were comfortably running WoW less than a week earlier could now not even copy files without it being impossible to do anything in the background. Even unzipping small .zip files totally destroys my resources and I struggle to open a .txt file, let alone browse folders.

My PC was built in Jan '05 and the spec is:

Athlon 64 3500+
Asus A8V Deluxe
2x 512mb Corsair DDR XMS3200XL Platinum TwinX
Nvidia GeForce 7600GT (originally 6800GT but died in November)
2x 160GB Deskstars
Windows XP

My router is an overpriced Belkin piece of rubbish, I've learnt my lesson about patience :)

Any help is much appreciated, right now all I want my PC for is running Word, Winamp and Firefox at the same time without it slowing down. I'm due for an overhaul but am limited to an AGP motherboard, unless I invest in another graphics card in the space of four months.
