So it's a little bit warm at the moment and my GF is loosing the plot over it.

Considering some sort of small appliance that can cool a room, not sure what sort of budget, if we owned the house maybe consider pluming in real air con but of course that would cost an exceptional amount

Is there anything reasonable? Or are they all just useless appliances?

What size room will you be using it in? I bought a 9000 BTU portable air conditioner for £320 two years ago and it does an alright job for our bedroom and the home office (little box room) although it takes a bit of time to cool things.

Silent/sleep mode is a joke but if we get the room down to temperature before we go to sleep we're good to turn it off through the night.

downstairs in open plan so it's kitchen / living room, must be 6-8 metres by 4 metres at the most. However can't shut it off from upstairs.

Shutting it off from upstairs isn't an issue, cool air sinks and that's the problem I have with my flat where it's an upstairs flat with an open plan staircase down to the hallway. I bought a 14,000BTU monstrosity for a 34sqm room and most of the cooling is lost going down the stairs. With temperature probes set up in the room to test in a room which started off at 28c, it cooled the area in direct line down to 24c, the hallway down to 21c and the other side of the room was still at 26c and rising. Once outside dropped below 24c it was more effective for the windows to push a breeze through to cool the room.

The best effect was having it blow across the sofas so the area felt cool, but it struggled to cool the whole room down due to the amount of heat coming from the loft space, best to think of it as being a very cold noisy fan. It'll certainly help cool the occupants but they are very loud because the compressor is inside the unit, not on the outside like it is on a split system.

Following on from my last post, I'd recommend spending a little extra on a reliable unit. Ours is currently tripping an RCD. Will have to figure out how to fix that...
Two year old unit, light use...

Any specific recommendations on little AC units? I thought there was a massive thread in here but maybe not…

Seems worthwhile considering we sleep in the loft room, and we share the box room office on Mondays and Fridays. Hopefully theres something out there that’ll do the job but also be ok to lug up and downstairs a few times.

We have sash windows so would be nice and easy to stick a bit of wood in (with a hole) for the exhaust.

In my experience they're a bit flimsy, so I'm more inclined to get a good warranty or a good price than what's on paper a good unit.

I had a Pinguino which scores well on Which etc and then it died, could not get it back to life.

I look for relative bargains now instead, got an EGL upstairs which have been around £100 via Frasers and a Luko unit which does the job. But I'm also not going to worry too much if they expire at some point.

I was just looking at the Delonghi's. Perhaps aesthetics over build quality?

What kinda dB would be acceptable for an office room? Anything under 50db?

I know other people think they are pretty good quality - it's possible that I just got unlucky. My point is more that I would be very wary of spending say £600 on one just because it seems like good quality, even allegedly good brands can die.

In terms of dB, they're all very loud and I wouldn't trust the spec sheets. I had the PACEL98 which apparently can go up to 64dB.

I tended to run mine for the full day, and just switch it off for the period that I had an important call or whatever.

I have a DeLonghi unit on it’s 6th summer and it’s been worth every cent of the €500 it cost.

The lowest fan setting isn’t too bad, but it’s the chiller that makes a racket.

Cool or Quiet - there can be only one.

I have a Goodhome 9000btu unit which is ok, the fans aren't too loud but as with others when the compressor(?) kicks in it's more noisy.
I’ve found having the fan on medium makes the compressor coming in and out less noticeable without having the fan howling all the time.

Set the A/C target temp to 23-24°C and it’ll keep the room comfortable without needing to run all night. If your house isn’t perfectly insulated, mobile A/C isn’t going to get your room down to 18°C when it’s 35°C outside.

Regarding noise.. from some searching today it seems there’s really very little point trying to find actually quite portable AC units due to the compressors. I guess my girlfriend (from Yorkshire) would never let me run it overnight anyway :p
