Hi everyone

I've been with a Surface Pro 2 since it's release and have been very happy with it but the performance is lacking for what I do on it.

So I'm coming back to building my own rig and as the title states I'm looking for something small and quiet.

I was considering purchasing an Intel Xeon processor, and 16GB RAM - as far as that I want to be able to just put one silent fan inside a small (Mac Mini sized case.)

Can anyone suggest anything as close as possible - fyi my budget is around £1100

Total : £1,274.30 (includes shipping : ).

didn't include shipping cuz you get it free =)

That's a different user's thread. Notice the U instead of the A in the name :)

Until he tells us what it's primary use will be it's pointless coming up with suggestions really

My primary use it a lot of programming, including graphic creation in illustrator/photoshop and rendering that inside mobile phone graphics engines etc + app development.

Other uses for the system are video transcoding, using Adobe Lightroom to work with RAW based images etc and Working with Virtual Machines

The Surface Pro 2 pretty much takes some time to do these tasks due to the i5 CPU - so would prefer a newer i7

Was the Xeon needed for a specific purpose (instruction set) or something?

nVidia card for CUDA acceleration etc
i7 for beast CPU performance/rendering
etc

However quite a big larger than a mac mini :(

I think possibly one of those Gigabyte BRIX/Intel NUC style machines would work well for you

I'm actually liking Shivy011's build better - I don't really need an ODD :)

Also I forgot to mention, I won't need storage as I already have an SSD (Intel 520) and 750GB HDD.

My main aim for this build is small and quiet, I think I could get away with using a lower spec GPU but is there any way I can reduce the amount of fans in this build. I'm looking for the most quietest possible build. Fanless Cooler possibly??

I doubt you will find a decent passive CPU cooler for a high end chip that isn't also huge. You would be surprised how quiet a decent low profile cooler can be if you aren't overclocking the processor though.

No, please DO NOT get the rajintek zelos. It has gaps between the heatpipes and its terrible. I have one and fully regret purchasing it.

I'd like to add it is near silent, but temps fly up to nearly 90C. I have reapplied an remounted many a time; the cooler just isn't up to it.

Okay sorry for suggesting that, have no idea about low profile coolers which are good - can anyone suggest one?
