Is there such a thing out there?
To my mind, the ipod touch is basically an iphone without the phone function, is there an android equivalent?
I'd like a device for emails, whatsapp, calendar, social media etc to accompany a dumb phone - basically to try and get away from distraction.
The alternative is to get a big smart phone but there's obviously a premium to be paid there and an additional phone number to maintain...

Just buy a sim free phone and don't put a sim in there. I have an old phone, with no sim, I let my son use for photos/videos and making stop-motion stuff, which is effectively a small android tablet.

Whatsapp might be a problem though as i think that might need a number.

whatsapp only needs a number to get it going and then you're golden! got it running on my desktop atm

It's more if there was a decent spec device around that could do the android stuff I want without needing a sim

Yeah, but unlike iPhones Androids are available at all price levels, so no need for a cheap no-phone option.

You can get an Xperia XZ1 from Amazon for £200 right now - I just happen to have ordered one for my actual phone as it's a steal.

The XZ1 is an excellent phone specially for £200. Apple phones are Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy over priced for what they offer. Tbh most phones are over priced by over 50%. A phone now cost the price of a top spec laptop.

XZ1 for that price is nuts, considering it's specs is flagship level with the SD835.

But yes as above you just don't put a SIM in. You can even leave it on aeroplane mode if you're that worried.

yeah, but using the ipod as an example, the most recent ipod touch is 299 quid for the top spec, the most recent iphone is over 1k so obviously there's a lot of extra cash in buying a good phone than buying a tablet or other device

The top spec ipod touch is nothing like an iphone. It is way behind in tech, hence the low price.

It is approaching 4 years old now.

The A8 chip for example was used in the iphone 6.
