Hi Guys,

My better half is looking to expand her company VIOP phone system to the next level and because "I do computers" I have been tasked with the job :rolleyes:

The Current setup simply involves a couple of (£70) Gigaset headsets conected to a Gigaset A5580 IP using a single number using sipgate (http://www.sipgate.co.uk/user/) as a PAYG service.

It works relatively well but lacks many features.

She would like some kind of system where a customer dials a singular number (ideally the same as currently have with sipgate), is greeted with the "Thanks you for calling Blah blah blah, press 1 for sales, press 2 general enquires, press 3 if you like cabbage on toast" and the call is then transferred to the relevant handset group where a "pool" of say 4 handsets can answer. The answerer can then answer with the correct response of "Welcome to sales, how can I help".

Ideally the existing hardware can be reused, and it would be *nice* to have call hold music, call record, and maybe even some kind of calling queue for busy periods however these are not a deal breakers.

Whilst the idea of opting for a 'hosted' VOIP solution seems appealing, I would like to keep the solution 'in house' as 95% of calls are incoming and currently the outgoing calls are only 1p pm - £50 lasts 3 or 4 months apparently! Trouble is, I am not entirely sure what I need other than a couple more phones!

Is it right I need some kind of IP PBX?

The topology looks right;

If so am I right in thinking, get an IP PBX plug it in between the WAN and LAN switch and away you go? Any recommendations for setups?

The functionality for call queuing, comfort messages and call routing is usually provided by ACD, (Automatic Call Distribution) functions. The PBX will allow you to set up up hunt groups so that a number of phones can ring, either all at the same time, (splash group) or in order (sequential). The ACD functions are normally an extra on PBX systems, often with limited functionality, but hunt groups and IVR (Press 1 for sales etc) should be on it.

If you are picking up a cheapo PBX just make sure it has ACD functions.

By the way, I work for a company that provide ACD systems which connect to an existing PBX to offer ACD, Queuing, etc, to companies that want to keep the functionality in house. However, if this is a small business with no ACD, I would seriously consider the hosted IP PBX option. You can then add on the ACD functions and it is usually cheaper.

It has hunt groups for ringing a group of phones and IVR to offer choices. They are the main things. I have never set one up though. Good luck
