small cheap upgrade or whole new system

Hi

My current pc is a E6600 2.4 gig dual core cpu, 8800 GTX 768meg graphics card, 4 gig ram and raptor hard drive. I game at 1680 x 1050. The motherboard is a Gigabyte 965p DS3P.

I have been looking at buying a whole new system but am deciding against it due to cost and that its really hard to get all the components at the moment such as the ATI graphics cards.

Can anyone tell me of an upgrade I could get which would give my system a boost allowing me to play current games smoothly as I'm really struggling.

The 8800GTX still isn't a bad card performance-wise. Personally I think you'd be better off saving your money for a bit, until the prices of the 58xx cards have come down a little, or until you're ready to spend quite bit more upgrading the whole system.

What games are you struggling with? What upgrade might help you depends a lot on what you are playing, as some games are always GPU-bound while others can benefit, for example, from a CPU with more cores.

I've currently got The Sabateur which really grinds to a halt when action starts. Also The new King Arhtur game is slow.

I've just really noticed a massive slowdown in the latest games, GTA 4 is unplayable.
