Small claims now available for IP Infringement

Whats the best way to protect your pictures? Add watermarks etc? Whats stopping someone nicking your photo from say flickr and claiming it is theres,

Ensuring the EXIF file is embedded with your copyright, along with filling out the IPTC metadata may help. Providing that was stripped, then I would imagine if you went to a court, then having the original camera negative, for example a RAW file would be enough to show you are the true copyright holder.

Ultimately though, the issue with putting images on the web is that it is possible to steal them by somebody determined enough. Adding watermarks can make doing so pointless, but then watermarks just ruin the photo in the first place.

Yup and watermarks can be shopped out quite easily unless you use a large one that totally ruins the image anyway.

If someone wants to steal your image then they will but the idea is to upload low res ones like 800 pixels wide, that way they can't use that image to make money because they don't have one in high enough resolution to do so.

Just don't worry about people "stealing" your images as such. Only upload small images as mrk said and stick a small watermark/logo in the corner somewhere. If it's small enough it's not going to detract from the image and then if someone does "steal" your image for their website it'll probably end up being free advertising as most don't bother to remove the logo anyway...

If it's a company stealing your image don't worry about it, get yourself down the pub for a celebratory pint and then get to the SCC. ;)

Is what I do. I know of a lot of websites/forums using my images, all not for profit (as such) but I don't mind as they aren't being used for profit and they all have the logo on leading people back to my gallery anyway.
