I have a small front garden which is a total mess. The privet bushes are mad, and I'd like them removed or at least cut back to waist level (they are probably around 10ft). There's also some rubble that I need shifted.

I'm considering getting gardeners in and letting them do it, but alternatively I'm considering hiring a skip and just gutting the entire thing. It's a bit of a big job for me to do with just my car and lots of runs to the skip.

How much would something like this cost? I imagine that the garden could be cleared in 4 hours? Once it's tidied up I'm prepared to put woodchips or the like down and will source and do that myself. I just need the mess cleared up and it's got to the point it's a bit much for me to do.

It's likely a job most people won't want so they are likely to give you stupid estimates to make it worth their while.

I'd just hire a skip , buy some buckfast and kitkats and get the local smackheads to fill the skip

How long is the privet hedge, & how much rubble.
You'll be surprised how much hedge there is once you start removing it, plus you have the stumps to remove.

Phone a few skip firms for the cost of a skip, but a 6yd skip is around £200 or so, depends on area, unlikely you will away with a smaller one, depends on quanity of rubbish.

Do you not know anybody who is currently unemployed and looking for work? I know a few friends of mine.

I'm sure they'd appreciate the work their way. Hire a skip yourself, pay them £50 for the day, everyone is happy.

It's not like you need skilled or experienced people I wouldn't have thought?

If you cant get the skip on your land you will need to pay extra for a road license. Without they are about £180-£200 for an 8 yard builders, with probably about £220. Prices may vary depending on where you are and what size you need. Ring a few skip / waste people up and ask tbh.

Glasgow Council like many others provide a free bulk uplift service, http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=6119.

So provided you cut it down yourself all you have to do is bag/bundle the waste and leave it out for them.

A quick scan at the site suggests that rubble is a chargeable item and the charges are £61 for a half hour. I presume that's just based on how long it takes them to put it in the truck. Worth giving them a ring either way.
