I originally made a slight mistake getting this board with the mad rush getting it despatched before the delays and never payed attention to the missing IDE slots. However, no matter. At some point I'll replace my existing legacy drives.

Windows 7 and Vista is already Sata. They are detected. Though I bought little iomax Sata to IDE converters to get me by for a while. Sadly the board isn't detecting either the optical or the XP IDE drives.

I'm wondering if I have them connected to the wrong slots. Windows 7 is connected to Sata 1, Vista to Sata 2, XP to Sata 3 and the DVD-RW to Sata 5.
According to the BIOS Sata 4 and 6 is IDE...

The other thing that puzzles me is the black Sata connector. It says it's eSata.

"JMicron JMB363 Serial ATA connectors (7-pin SATA_E1 [black])

This connectors is for the serial Sata signal cables or Serial ATA optical disk drives."

Any advice?

Cheers!

Unfortunately it looks like you got the wrong adapter there.

That one is for use to connect newer SATA drives to an older IDE motherboard, not the other way around.

Depending on the price of a set of IDE to SATA converters, you may be better off just buying a SATA DVD-RW drive (£15) and a nice SATA HDD like this (£25).

Unfortuantly I think cmndr_andi is correct. IDE is slowly being phased out, especially on higher end chipsets like the 890FX, so the only real solution is to upgrade to SATA or change your mobo for something lower end!

Yeah, I'll have to replace my old drives then. The thing that threw me off with one of the reviews for that connector...

"I bought one of these to connect my ide hdd to my sata mobo, it worked like a charm!

one thing to note, you need to connect power to the hdd and the adapter for it to work, don't try to set the hdd as a slave it needs to be in master mode."

Only problem is it aint happening with mine.

For £7 + £1.99... "IDE to SATA or SATA to IDE Bi-Directional Converter Adaptor ATA 100/133" it would make more sense just upgrading the old parts.

Would I have to slipstream sata drivers for XP? since it only knows floppy drives...
This is one of the things I detested with XP unlike Vista and 7. Plop in a USB stick and away you go rather than scrounging about for salvaged floppy drives.
