Hi all,

There is a LAN that is getting put together next month that uses some low spec machines. Basically it's a BYOD LAN, but some people don't have PCs, so we have found 8 low spec (not actually sure what they are) Dell laptops to run games on.

We have successfully had a fair few Halo matches, along with Red Alert (Yes the original), I'm just wondering what else we can get away with. Halo worked really well and looked alright on the machines.

The other games that have been suggested are the following:

Unreal Tournament
Enemy Territory
Call of Duty (not tested)
CS:S (not tested)
Soldat
Total Annihilation

The other aspect is that it's got to be cheap or free. Oh, doesn't need internet connectivity to play. It's not got a great internet connection. Has anyone got any other suggestions?

Minecraft if you don't want to stick to FPS
Any of the early Command & Conquer games (they're all free now)
CS:S should be alright
Any of the Age of Empires series

Ah I forgot Total Annihilation, that was one that was suggested already, edited OP.

Didn't realise C&C:TS was free as well.

AoE, will have a look to see what that's like free/cheap wise.

Warsow; will have to check that out.

Quake; will suggest, but I don't think people are a fan of it.

Trackmania; forgot about that.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (the fact it's free helps!)
Quake 3 Arena
Original Call of Duty (back when the franchise was fun and original)
Unreal Tournament (1999 version - best one anyway IMO)

First two make for great LAN gaming. BF1942 and Flatout 2 are others which are great fun but not sure if it would run on those PC's.

To be honest most people into PC gaming have got an old PCI/PCI-e graphics card knocking around which could open up a few more options for games.

Flatout 1 - Racing mayhem that runs extremely well
AvP 2000 - Playing survivor on this as more and more aliens hunt you as the lone surviving marine, awesome stuff
