Hi,

I'm a first time OS X user and I've just been getting used to it over the last week or so. Anyway so far eveything has been going fine and I'm really liking the way OS X does things and the laptop itself. I have 2 small niggles though that are annoyng me:

Firstly, VLC player, 50% of the time when I open a DivX file it just hangs and uses 100% of the CPU until it's forced to quit. It's random whether it works or not. Any ideas/solutions?

Secondly, today I installed Office 2004 (which I got for the pricely sum of £17.31 through my Dad's works' license!) and then it updated it over the internet. However since then whenever it's booted up from cold it asks me to choose the boot drive (Macintosh HD is the only option). This is getting annoying because it used to go straight to the desktop very quickly and started loading my apps with no input. Anyway to restore it to how it was? Or have I caused this by doing something else without realising it?

That's it really. And those 2 are the *only* problems I've been having, I originally intended to dual boot with Windows XP but now I've been using it for a few days I'm going to save the HD space and not bother! The battery life is also incredible considering the specs of the laptop, and the size is perfect - nice size display and keyboard and still very portable and small. It also has acceptable speakers for a laptop.

Basically I'm a very happy customer! This has replaced my main rig because I don't play games and i don't regret that choice for a second.

for the VLC problem, make sure you've got the right version either Intel or Universal binary. That could be one of the reasons for the CPU usage spikes.

for the problem you've got Microsoft Office for Mac, I've never seen such an error message come up before. So there is little advice I can offer.

For the VLC problem you can get DivX from the DivX site which installs a codec that allows Quicktime and FrontRow to play DivX no problems :)

As for the MS Office thing very odd, but:

System Preferences > Startup Disk (Under System) > Select "Mac OS X, 10.4.8 on Macintosh HD" and then click Restart...

That should then make it realise there's only one OS to boot from :)

Thankyou both!

I had the universal binary of VLC, just installed the intel one and it seems fine now. I didn't know the page scrolled down :p

Also I've told it which drive to boot from even though that was the only option so I'm hoping that's fixed too I guess I will find out the morning :)

Try flip4mac.. lets Quicktime play WMV files.

Handy, and comes with a web plugin too.. so you can load Windows Media-based web videos.
