Ive got a little project im looking into doing. It requires a small wide screen monitor (20" at the absolute max).

My laptop has a 15.4" screen but a heathy 1920x1200 res. Is it possible to get a free standing screen under 20" at 1920 x 1200 or 1680 x 1050 at the very lowest?

Looking at OcUK's stock it would seem not. Unless something i require would cost a vast amount?

The best you're looking at is around 1680 on 20". 1920 on a 15" widescreen (i.e. your laptop) is the best that you'll get your hands on in that sort of physical size I'm afraid. I feel your pain because I love small dot pitch screens too, and the best I could get was a 1920 22".

I think if your wanting a 1920 on a freestanding you are most likely looking at 22in I'm afraid.

I saw a 1080 tv (had VGA, DVI and HDMI) in the place that sells Sony stuff that was about 12" or less. Was over a grand though iirc

Shame. A grand would be a bit too much!

Why is it that they can make 15.4" laptop screen at high resolutions but not a desktop monitor? Strikes me as a bit odd, and im sure there is a reason.

If i was to build a decent computer at around £700 it seems a waste to have a small monitor with something like a native res of 1366x768.

Im not into big monitors, this setup will have the monitor about 60cms away from my face so a big monitor, to me, would be stoopid. Its also got to be as small as possible so i can mount it on my laptop desk.

So 20" is looking like my best option. All i need now is to get one with mounting screw holes and power/HDMI connection pointing downwards...

Have a look at the Dell Professional 2009W Silver Monitor
Its 20", 1680x1050, wall mountable and downward facing connectors, available from the obvious, under £200
