looking to get my daughters -10 and 8- a small device/speaker that they can play music from in their bedrooms.
Open to streaming from spotify/youtube/apple music etc. as long as its simple and I can control the purchase/subscriptions

Budget is whatever as it is likely to be their Santa presents!- within reason!!!!!

any thoughts on the Echo Dot as this might work for size and price? Anyone know if you can play music through it if you can connect say an iPod or mp3 player to it?

AFAIK, Echo Dot has a tiny speaker. It's better connected by cable to a bigger system. The larger Echo devices are better as stand-alone speakers.

No doubt, but for a 10 year old...

Saying that, the whole range is on sale and likely will be again before Christmas.

All of them can take a 3.5mm jack input (dot included) and work with various streaming services without a hard requirement to have a smart phone to control them (although it definitely makes things easier)

My only recommendation when buying a Alexa device is get a smart plug / light to go with it. Really makes it a more useful device and is great for turning off bedside lamps when going to bed.

The 3.5mm on the echo dot is an output.
