Hi all i am after some advice to set up a network at work that is better then we currently have.

At the moment we have my bosses PC, where he does all the designs for jobs, then you have my PC where i access his PC via a shared folder to look at the drawings, i then make a production sheet and save them on his PC.

We are having problems that i'm not always able to access his PC so either PC or both has to be restarted etc its a right pain! our router is a zyxel p600hw-t1 v2

What we would like is maybe a better router or gigabit switch, a central storage device of some sort, NAS? with the capability of auto back up to a 2nd NAS or another device of site to conform with ISO.

What would be our best solution?

Cheers
Phill

sounds like you know what to do if the company is that small no point in spending big dolla on a server and the full bells and whistles.

What's your backup plan? What happens if the HDD in your boss's PC suddenly dies?

How large are the documents, and how many of them are there?

How much broadband bandwidth do you have available (up & down)?

What's your budget?

This is why i'm here asking for advice, currently don't have a back up plan, what is the best way? can you recommend the hardware?

The documents are coreldraw and excel and can be up to 100mb, there is a few thousand.

Don't have a budget will get what ever fits the job.

Line speed here is quite crap so would like a backup that can be set on a schedule for doing though the night.

I'd probably get a two bay Synology NAS, and then backup that to two or more external USB drives that can be rotated on and off site. It's a while since I've looked at them so hopefully someone else can suggest a suitable model.

An additional cloud based backup would be nice to have, but your upload speed will be against you. A good ADSL connection is going to take 15+ minutes to upload a 100MB document. If there aren't too many document changes per day it could be a viable option, but the initial upload would take a while.
