Hi All :D

Trying to setup a small network, 2pcs / printer / dvr
5 port switch
No internet / no gateway

1st pc (xp) works great, gets access to dvr & printer (web based access) all working fine.
seems easy to setup

2nd pc (w7) im pulling my hair out
Seems harder to do without a gateway.

can access dvr (web based) after working out the active x install, can log on to the dvr and all seems to work apart from the video wont show, maybe another problem.

Cant access
printer jetdirect web based, turned off firewall, it will even ping the ip address but still wont access the web server,
It had done before i starting messing with things thinking a small network would'nt be that hard

Im lost with networking as you can probably tell,

all my problems seem to be with Win7.
win7 network locations and all the extra security stuff has me going in circles.

I then swapped out the 5port switch for an old adsl gatway Wag54GS
So I could then use a gateway ip address for win7 and it seems happier.

But still cant access print server, or get video on my dvr.

Sorry this is so long, if you got to this then thanks for reading ;)

How do you guys do it, it cant be that hard can it ?
Does win7 really need to use a gateway ip

Hi, thanks for the replying

Im using static ips

Router 192.168.1.1 / 255.255.255.0
xp pc 192.168.1.5 / 255.255.255.0
win7 pc 192.168.1.10 / 255.255.255.0
dvr 192.168.1.40 / 255.255.255.0
Printer 192.168.1.30 / 255.255.255.0

have tried different ips before & after trying it with the router, but still same.

Do you folks use a router or just a switch for your networks ?
Apart from win7 not playing nice i would prefer just a switch !!

Well I found the problem,, Eset smart security
even though I had turned its firewall off it still blocked things, So i uninstalled and all was fine.
All but 1 issue, log into the dvr from Win7, lights on the switch go crazy like its streaming the video back to pc ok Just like it does with my xp pc, but the video wont show up.

Any ideas on this 1 ?

ether way thanks for your input folks
