I've just bought a laptop and I want to transfer some files from my desktop to the lappy. I'll be buying a wireless router in due course but am I right in thinking that a cat5 crossover cable will do what I need in the short term?

Also what does one do once the cable is connected?

Sorry for sounding like a complete noob but I'm completely new to this. I've got the cable already because one of my stage lights is controlled by RJ45/cat5.

if you don't already have a switch/hub, yes.

You will need to manually assign an ip address to each device though, which isn't hard.
