24 hours ago I spilt coke on my mouse. After going haywire for a bit it ended up working fine except for the right button sticking. In the end I poured water on the mouse to try wash away the coke (I tried many things before this). This fixed the sticking but made the mouse go crazy. I took it out to let it dry and tried another.

24 hours later and I've no idea what has happened. Somehow the malfunctioning mouse has messed about with the windows software as both mice barely work. Using them to click on any open window or the taskbar does nothing, left or right clicking. Although they work for clicking on desktop icons.

Does anyone know how on earth I would fix this? as my pc is inoperable now and I'm writing this on my laptop. Each time I plug in a different mouse it installs new drivers so I don't know what else to do.

:(

Stripping it and washing it with water was a good plan. Trying loads of things before this was stupid though, as any time the mouse is plugged in and covered in coke is bad time.

Your mouse is dead. Serve you right. I'm sure I should be interested in how you've broken windows in the process, but I'm currently too amused to care. Thank you for posting this.

Right so you're a ****? Thanks for informing me

If you do something stupid then tell people about it you should expect to be laughed at. I may well be a "****" but you've just killed a mouse so I'm winning really:)

So. Reasons I can think of why you could be experiencing continued problems:
1/You haven't noticed you're still trying to use the same mouse
2/Your desk is covered in coke
3/Your other mouse is covered in coke
4/Your keyboard is covered in coke
5/You've got some coke on your motherboard
6/Windows has thrown a hissy fit, coincidence
7/Your mouse dying shorted part of your motherboard

Is this really your idea of winning something. I post something asking for help, fine it's silly and go ahead and laugh, I don't care as long as I get a bit of help. But then you go post 2 sentences basically saying: 'Hi I'm scum, I am scum and I'm also scum'.

You didn't make it to 6 or 7 then?

Hard to tell what help you're hoping for really. Your mouse is dead, it (probably) wouldn't be if you'd asked google or us what to do after pouring coke on it. So now windows is misbehaving, I've suggested coincidence or motherboard damage.

Doesn't seem to have occurred to you to mention what the mouse was, so none of us have any idea if it was connected by usb when it died or not. If it wasn't your hardware is probably fine.

Next time you spill water / coke etc on an electrical gadget:
1)disconnect / switch off immediately
2)consider rinsing with water, preferably de-ionised
3)try to take apart sufficient to help the drying process
4) consider using a hairdryer to speed drying
5) once you are convinced it is fully dry leave it for a further several days in a warm dry place such as an airing cupboard or above radiator

Dealing with the position you are in now (I am not an expert but as no one else seems to want to be helpful...)

Are you sure that moisture hasn't got into the mouse port/ usb port or connector?

buy or borrow another mouse known to be working

Remove existing mouse drivers then connect your 'new' mouse and install the drivers.

I know for sure this 2nd mouse works fine. I've used it for years and am using it now on this laptop fine. However in my main pc it continually stops responding for a couple of seconds each time. I'm guessing there is some more serious problem here? I'm thinking of reinstalling windows tonight unless I can find a software solution. I'm using win 7 by the way if that helps. Also yes I've uninstalled drivers, uninstalled everything logitech from the registry

Show Nonpresent Devices

Windows keeps a Device Manager entry for every piece of hardware that's ever been recognized by the system, regardless of whether it is currently present in the machine or was even set up correctly in the first place. The "View Hidden Devices" option in Device Manager won't show you these "residual" drivers.

You can force it to show you everything by going to <My Computer> <Properties> <Advanced system settings> <Environment Variables> & adding a new system variable with the name:

DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES
value of 1

Restart

Now opening Device Manager and choosing <View> <Show Hidden Devices> really will show you everything.

Any "residual" drivers can sometimes cause all kinds of weirdness and are best removed by right-clicking on their entry in the Device Manager and choosing "uninstall".

If it is a USB mouse, have you tried different ports? If it is a PS2 mouse try resetting your CMOS. Most motherboards have a jumper you move for a few seconds. Removing the battery will do it too.

A dodgy mouse may have triggered the motherboard to deactivate the PS2 sockets on the motherboard. As daft as the above sounds I had this happen to me.

My brother's mouse had stopped working, and he asked me to try it on my PC. I did and nothing happened. I then tried to go back to typing and my keyboard was dead. I thought my brothers broken mouse had fried my PS2 sockets so bought a new USB keyboard.

A few days later I needed to reset my BIOS after some fiddling caused my PC not to POST. The old keyboard happened to be plugged in still and it lit up after the restart and worked perfectly
