Following the tutorial here
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuMagazine/HowTo/InstallingSteam

Iv actually got steam installed without any problem, even updated steam! But steam wont load, the log in bit comes up but nothing else.

I missed out the step
After wine is done being installed, run wine iexplore http://winehq.org and install Gecko.
I suspect that is the problem. But i do not understand it!. I cant find anywhere to download and install this gecko thing?
thanks
marc

Ok installed, terraria and it works wonderfully! but i cant help to notice that steam runs extremely slow while other programs run fast, iv got terraria running on a 2nd screen and im typeing this. Steam is extremely slow! is this due to wine?

Quite possibly, yes. I stopped using Wine as I had many issues with it; do you know of any problems reported on the Wine AppDB that are similar to the one you're experiencing? There might be some fixes listed if so. :)

iv had a look and tried a few things, changing from vista > xp has made a difference but its a 50/50 chance steam will actually load up. When it loads up when wines set to run as xp, its slow but not as bad when its running in vista mode.
Ill continue looking and maybe play around with the settings and switch off ubuntu stuff that i dont need. Could possibly because the pc cant cope, its only a dual core 2.3ghz with 4gb ram.
